Building a "Steam Machine Killer" for Ultrawide Gaming. Triumphs, Trade-offs, and Real-Time Stock Battles

I was waiting for the Steam Machine since it was first announced. My last gaming PC died on me 1½ years ago. I wanted to replace it with a modern, high-performance Linux-based solution, so the Steam Machine should have been exactly what I needed. I waited and waited, and finally it dropped. The new 2TB Steam Machine. A sleek, 6-inch console footprint running SteamOS right out of the box for … €1,359. Not better than my PS5. I was disappointed.
It was only at that point that I actually started to vet my needs against the cost and performance of the Steam Machine. I had a specific problem: my battle station centers around a 3440x1440p ultrawide monitor — my daily driver for both work and gaming.
Pushing nearly 5 million pixels on demanding AAA titles I finally want to play — like Cyberpunk 2077 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 — requires serious graphical muscle. Looking closely at the Steam Machine’s specs, I noticed a fatal flaw for my use case. It only ships with 8GB of dedicated VRAM. At ultrawide resolutions, modern games will overflow an 8GB buffer instantly, resulting in muddy textures and aggressive stuttering.
The Challenge
So, I set a mission: build a custom Linux gaming PC using Alternate.at that targets the Steam Machine’s price range, runs a flawless console-style Linux OS, but delivers significantly more power.
Did I succeed? Mostly. Did I hit the price target? Not quite.
Here is an honest breakdown of the triumphs, the compromises, and the chaotic reality of building a PC in the current market.
The Target vs. The Reality: Where We Missed the Mark
Before diving into how powerful this machine is, let’s talk about the challenges and where this DIY route couldn’t compete with an official Valve product. Also worth mentioning: I chose to let Alternate assemble the whole machine. There was a promotion running for free assembly when ordering through their configurator — that normally costs €200.
My knowledge gap
I just did not have the time to stay on top of hardware over the last few years. I also don’t care too much, honestly. So I did what every sensible person would do and asked the AI. I worked with Gemini to build this machine, and it worked surprisingly well. It did a great job vetting the hardware and making sure everything was compatible. The rest was handled by the configurator, to avoid me choosing incompatible components.
1. The Price Creep (The “Failed” Goal)
My initial target was to stay strictly within the €1,359 ballpark of the 2TB Steam Machine. We almost had it, but the components market had other plans. Real-time stock volatility is brutal. Right as we were finalizing the build, mid-tier RAM kits sold out during assembly. To ensure a properly tuned dual-channel setup for AMD, I had to pivot to a premium Corsair 32GB DDR5-6000 kit priced at €379.99.
Combined with stepping up to a next-generation graphics architecture and a flagship-tier SSD, the final tally landed at roughly €1,647. While it bridges the gap into a higher price tier, the massive performance delta makes every extra euro well spent.
2. Form Factor & The Missing Ecosystem
If you buy an official Steam Machine, you get a beautiful, highly customized, ultra-compact 6-inch cube engineered specifically by Valve.
The Look: My build is a standard Micro-ATX mini-tower (Fractal Design Pop Mini Air). It looks incredibly sharp with its mesh front panel and clean glass, but it’s still a desktop PC chassis — not a bespoke boutique console.
The Controller: There is no revolutionary Steam Controller or unique hardware ecosystem trickery here. I am running standard, trusty peripherals: a wired Xbox 360 controller via USB, a PS5 DualSense pad, a USB mouse, and a Bluetooth keyboard. Something I’ll be missing out on with the official Steam Machine, but it’s not a big deal for me.
The Blueprint: What’s Under the Hood
That’s what matters. Keep in mind prices change, and some things might be cheaper or more expensive today. Even though we blew past the budget by about €280, the specification sheet of this custom rig completely eclipses the standalone console.

Choosing the OS
I knew one thing — no more Windows. I have a distaste for Windows, and their recent moves haven’t helped. On top of that, I plan to use this machine purely for gaming and don’t need any of the bloat that comes with it.
The two real options are SteamOS, which is now actually available for a wider range of hardware, or CachyOS if you don’t need the couch-console experience. I went with CachyOS and the KDE Plasma desktop environment. CachyOS is an Arch-based Linux distribution compiled specifically for modern CPU architectures. It uses optimized kernels that minimize micro-stutters and maximize frame pacing, and its gaming-focused flavor is exactly what I was after.
The Hybrid Experience
By setting Steam to automatically launch in Big Picture Mode on startup, the PC functions exactly like a Steam Machine the second the power button is pressed — booting straight into a gorgeous, controller-friendly UI. Not sure if I’ll actually do that, though.
Furthermore, because I have a decent library of games on the Epic Games Store (like Satisfactory), I’m using the open-source Heroic Games Launcher. Heroic bridges the gap flawlessly, handles Epic cloud saves natively on Linux, and lets me add Satisfactory directly into my Steam Library with a single click.
The Performance Verdict: Was It Worth It?
If I had stuck to the standalone Steam Machine, Cyberpunk 2077 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 would have forced me into aggressive upscaling (FSR) or dropping settings to Low just to prevent the 8GB VRAM from choking at 3440x1440p.
With this custom rig, the 16GB RX 9070 and 32GB of dual-channel RAM completely open the floodgates. I can comfortably target High/Ultra settings natively, using RDNA 4’s upgraded ray tracing architecture without turning my gameplay into a slideshow. And thanks to the free assembly promotion on Alternate.at, professional technicians handled the cable management and stress-testing for €0 — saving time, which is the one thing I have the least of.
It isn’t as small as a Steam Machine, it cost more than I originally intended, and it won’t turn heads as a unique piece of Valve collector’s hardware. But as a pure, unadulterated Linux gaming machine, it will do perfectly fine.
